Ketoprak

Ketoprak is a traditional Indonesian theatrical form, primarily found in Java, Indonesia. It is characterized by its use of historical or legendary stories, often from Javanese history or folklore. Unlike Wayang Kulit (shadow puppetry) or Wayang Orang (human wayang), which also draw heavily on Hindu epics, Ketoprak typically focuses on local narratives and themes.

The performances involve live actors who sing, dance, and act out the story, accompanied by a Gamelan orchestra. The dialogue is usually in Javanese, with varying levels of formality depending on the status of the characters. Costumes are elaborate and reflect the period and social standing of the roles being portrayed.

Ketoprak performances often incorporate elements of social commentary and humor, making them accessible and engaging for a wide audience. While originally performed in open-air venues, Ketoprak can now also be found in theaters and on television. The art form has evolved over time, incorporating modern elements while maintaining its core traditions.
