Halki (Greece)

Halki, also spelled Chalki or Khalki (Greek: Χάλκη), is a Greek island and municipality in the Dodecanese archipelago, located in the Aegean Sea. It lies approximately 6 km (4 miles) west of Rhodes. The island has a land area of 28 square kilometers (11 sq mi) and a population of approximately 500 inhabitants, primarily residing in the village of Emborio, also known as Halki Town.

Historically, Halki possessed a significant shipbuilding industry, which declined in the 19th century. Sponge diving was also an important economic activity. Today, the island's economy is primarily driven by tourism.

The island's terrain is largely mountainous. A prominent landmark is the medieval fortress, built by the Knights of Saint John, overlooking Emborio. The Monastery of Agios Ioannis Prodromos (Saint John the Baptist), located on the western side of the island, is another site of historical and religious significance.

Halki is known for its traditional architecture, peaceful atmosphere, and limited car traffic. Efforts have been made to promote sustainable tourism and preserve the island's natural environment. The entire island is a Natura 2000 protected area, recognizing its ecological importance.
