Flag Day

Flag Day is a day observed in the United States on June 14th. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which occurred on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. While not a federal holiday (a holiday authorized by the U.S. Congress), Flag Day is officially observed; Title 36 of the United States Code, § 110 describes Flag Day and encourages U.S. citizens to celebrate.

The holiday is particularly important in the state of Pennsylvania, where it originated. In 1885, a schoolteacher named Bernard Cigrand first proposed an annual observance of Flag Day in Waubeka, Wisconsin. He later moved to Chicago and continued to advocate for the holiday. Various other individuals and organizations also promoted the concept in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Pennsylvania officially recognized Flag Day in 1937. The U.S. Congress followed suit and officially established National Flag Day on August 3, 1949.

Flag Day is often celebrated with parades, flag-raising ceremonies, essay contests, and other community events. Many Americans display the U.S. flag at their homes and businesses. It is also a day to reflect on the symbolism of the flag and the values it represents. The week of June 14th is also designated as National Flag Week.
