HMS Magnet (1812)

HMS Magnet was a British Royal Navy Archer-class brig-sloop launched in 1812. Primarily employed in anti-slavery patrols off the coast of West Africa, Magnet captured several slave ships during her service.

Built by Thomas Read at Bridport, Magnet was commissioned in July 1812 under Commander Robert Faussett, who died later that year. Command then passed to Commander James Black in December 1812.

Magnet saw action during the War of 1812, participating in operations along the American coastline.

Between 1819 and 1829, Magnet, under various commanders, was actively involved in suppressing the transatlantic slave trade. Notable captures included Spanish and Portuguese vessels carrying enslaved Africans. These actions involved detaining the ships, liberating the enslaved individuals, and prosecuting the slave traders.

She was eventually sold out of the service in 1831. Her operational history highlights the Royal Navy's increased commitment to abolishing the slave trade during the early 19th century.
