Fai chun
Fai chun (揮春), also known as spring couplets, are traditional decorations used during Chinese New Year. They are typically rectangular or diamond-shaped pieces of red paper inscribed with auspicious phrases and blessings in Chinese calligraphy.
The phrases written on fai chun often express hopes for good fortune, prosperity, health, and happiness in the coming year. Common themes include wealth, success, longevity, and family harmony. The act of writing and displaying fai chun is a cultural tradition believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.
Fai chun are usually pasted on or around doors, windows, and walls of homes, offices, and shops in the days leading up to Chinese New Year. They remain in place throughout the Chinese New Year celebration period. The red color of the paper is considered auspicious and symbolic of good fortune and joy. Different regions and families may have their own specific preferred phrases and styles of calligraphy. New fai chun are typically put up each year, replacing the old ones to symbolize a fresh start.
