WGM (AM)

WGM, when followed by (AM), commonly refers to Woman Grandmaster (with an “AM” for “American”). It is used to specifically denote a female chess player who has achieved the Woman Grandmaster title awarded by FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs, the International Chess Federation) and who is also American. The WGM title is a lifetime title awarded to women who achieve a certain level of skill and performance in chess, as measured by their Elo rating and performance in rated tournaments. Achieving specific norms (high scores in specific events against sufficiently highly rated opponents) are required to attain the title.

The "(AM)" suffix is used to disambiguate the player, indicating their nationality, as there are Woman Grandmasters from many different countries. Without the "(AM)", "WGM" generally refers to any Woman Grandmaster regardless of nationality. The addition helps to avoid confusion when discussing or listing players.
