USS LST-59
USS LST-59 was a United States Navy LST-542-class tank landing ship built by Dravo Corporation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Launched on 17 August 1943 and commissioned on 9 October 1943, she served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
LST-59 participated in several major amphibious landings, including the assault and occupation of Saipan (June 1944), the assault and occupation of Guam (July 1944), and the assault and occupation of Iwo Jima (February 1945). Her role in these operations involved transporting troops, vehicles, and supplies to the landing beaches, often under enemy fire.
Following the end of World War II, LST-59 performed occupation duty in the Far East until early 1946. She was decommissioned on 19 February 1946 and struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 12 March 1946. On 24 December 1947, she was sold to the Walter Hughes Oil Company for conversion to commercial service.
USS LST-59 earned three battle stars for her World War II service.
