Saramandaia (1976 TV series)

Saramandaia (1976 TV series)

Saramandaia was a Brazilian telenovela (soap opera) that originally aired on Rede Globo from May 3 to December 3, 1976. Created by Dias Gomes and directed by Gonzaga Blota, it is considered a landmark in Brazilian television history, known for its innovative use of magical realism and its satirical critique of Brazilian society, particularly political corruption and social conservatism.

The plot revolves around the fictional town of Bole-Bole, inhabited by eccentric characters with unusual and often fantastical abilities. Examples include Dona Redonda, who swells to an enormous size when angry, and Professor Aristóbulo, who is covered in ants. These extraordinary characteristics served as metaphors for human flaws and societal issues.

The telenovela was highly successful, influencing subsequent Brazilian television productions and contributing to the popularization of magical realism in the medium. It is remembered for its bold storytelling, its memorable characters, and its lasting impact on Brazilian culture. A remake of Saramandaia aired on Rede Globo in 2013.
