Velikiye Luki
Velikiye Luki is a city in Pskov Oblast, Russia. It is located on the Lovat River, approximately 365 kilometers (227 miles) southeast of Pskov.
Historically, Velikiye Luki has been an important strategic point due to its location on trade routes and its role as a fortress city protecting the approaches to Moscow. Its name, meaning "Great Bows" or "Great Bends," likely refers to the Lovat River's curves in the area.
The city was first mentioned in chronicles in 1166. It endured numerous sieges and battles throughout its history, particularly during the Time of Troubles in the early 17th century and during World War II, when it was the site of fierce fighting between Soviet and German forces. The city was heavily damaged during the war.
Today, Velikiye Luki is an industrial and transportation hub. Industries include machine building, metalworking, and food processing. The city also has several educational institutions and cultural sites, including museums and historical monuments. It retains its significance as a railway junction.
