Robert Steele (Illinois politician)
Robert Steele (born February 4, 1938, died July 19, 2017) was an American politician and businessman who served as a Democratic member of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, representing the 2nd district, from 2006 until his death.
Steele was born in Cairo, Illinois. He received a bachelor's degree in political science from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Before entering politics, Steele worked in various business roles, including in the insurance and real estate industries.
In 2006, Steele was elected to the Cook County Board of Commissioners, succeeding John Stroger. During his tenure, Steele focused on issues such as healthcare access, public safety, and economic development in his district, which included parts of Chicago's South Side and the southern suburbs. He served on various committees, including the Health and Hospitals Committee and the Finance Committee.
Steele was known for his advocacy for underserved communities and for his commitment to improving the lives of Cook County residents. He also served as chairman of the Cook County Forest Preserve District's Finance Committee.
Steele passed away in July 2017 after a brief illness. His death led to a vacancy on the Cook County Board, which was filled through appointment. He was survived by his wife, Bobbie, and their children.
