Matteo Orsini (bishop)

Matteo Orsini (died August 18, 1305) was an Italian Roman Catholic cardinal and bishop. He belonged to the prominent Orsini family of Rome.

He was created Cardinal Deacon of Santa Maria in Portico Octaviae on December 17, 1262, by Pope Urban IV. He participated in the papal elections of 1264–1265 (electing Pope Clement IV), 1268–1271 (electing Pope Gregory X), 1276 (January, electing Pope Innocent V), 1276 (July, electing Pope Adrian V), 1276 (August/September, electing Pope John XXI), 1280–1281 (electing Pope Martin IV), 1285 (electing Pope Honorius IV), 1287–1288 (electing Pope Nicholas IV), and 1292–1294 (electing Pope Celestine V).

He became Cardinal Priest of San Lorenzo in Lucina in 1288.

In 1278, Pope Nicholas III appointed him papal legate to negotiate peace between King Rudolf I of Germany and King Charles I of Sicily.

Orsini served as Archpriest of the Lateran Basilica and also as Prior of the Basilica of St. Peter.

He was appointed Bishop of Ostia e Velletri in 1297, and therefore became Dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals. As Dean, he presided over the papal conclave of 1303, which elected Pope Benedict XI. He died in 1305.
