Boyracer

A boyracer (sometimes hyphenated as boy-racer) is a derogatory term, primarily used in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, to describe a young male driver perceived to be driving in a reckless, antisocial, or aggressive manner. The term implies a connection to street racing and the modification of vehicles, often for aesthetic rather than functional purposes.

Boyracers are typically associated with vehicles that have been heavily modified to appear faster or more aggressive, often featuring aftermarket modifications like loud exhausts, large spoilers, lowered suspension, and prominent decals. The vehicles themselves may or may not be high-performance models, and modifications are sometimes considered to be more about visual impact than actual performance enhancement.

The term carries a negative connotation, suggesting immaturity, a lack of respect for road safety, and a disregard for the comfort and safety of other road users and pedestrians. It's frequently used in media reports and public discourse concerning traffic offenses, noise complaints, and antisocial behaviour linked to modified vehicles. The stereotype often includes accusations of speeding, illegal street racing, "cruising" in public areas, and generating excessive noise.

While the term "boyracer" specifically refers to young males, similar terms like "hoon" (primarily used in Australia and New Zealand) describe similar behaviors regardless of the driver's gender. Legislation targeting antisocial driving behaviors often aims to address the issues commonly associated with the "boyracer" stereotype, such as excessive noise, dangerous driving, and unauthorized modifications.
