Mug (film)
Mug is a 2018 Polish satirical drama film directed by Małgorzata Szumowska. The film tells the story of Jacek, a young man living in rural Poland who works on the construction of what is intended to be the world's largest statue of Jesus Christ. After a severe accident disfigures his face, he undergoes a face transplant, becoming the first person in Poland to receive one.
The film explores themes of identity, faith, social exclusion, and the complex relationship between traditional values and modern society in Poland. Jacek's disfigurement and subsequent medical procedure lead to him becoming a figure of both curiosity and ridicule within his community. He struggles to adapt to his new face and the societal pressures that come with it, impacting his relationships and sense of self.
"Mug" premiered at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize. It received generally positive reviews, with critics praising Szumowska's direction, the film's social commentary, and the performances of the cast, particularly Mateusz Kościukiewicz as Jacek.
