Nea Roda

Nea Roda is a coastal town located on the eastern coast of the Halkidiki peninsula in northern Greece. It is part of the municipality of Aristotelis, within the regional unit of Halkidiki in the region of Central Macedonia.

Historically, Nea Roda was founded in 1923 by Greek refugees from Asia Minor following the population exchange between Greece and Turkey stipulated by the Treaty of Lausanne. The refugees were primarily from the Propontis (Sea of Marmara) region. The name "Nea Roda" translates to "New Roda," reflecting the origins of the inhabitants who came from the area near the ancient city of Roda in Propontis.

The town's economy is primarily based on tourism, fishing, and agriculture. Its sandy beaches and clear waters attract visitors during the summer months. It is also a popular destination for those seeking a quieter alternative to the more bustling resorts in Halkidiki.

A significant historical feature near Nea Roda is the remains of the Xerxes Canal. It is believed that the Persian king Xerxes I ordered the construction of this canal around 480 BC to bypass the treacherous cape of Mount Athos during his invasion of Greece. While the canal is no longer navigable, its remnants are still visible and are of archaeological interest.
