HKS (colour system)

HKS is a colour matching system widely used in Europe, especially in Germany, for printed materials. It's a collection of 120 spot colours and 3,520 tones for paper and printing. HKS colours can be reproduced in offset printing using specific premixed inks.

The name HKS derives from the initials of the companies involved in its creation: Hostmann-Steinberg Druckfarben, Kast + Ehinger Druckfarben, and H. Schmincke & Co. (artists’ colours).

HKS colours are designed to provide predictable and consistent colour reproduction, allowing designers and printers to specify and achieve precise colour matches across different print runs and on various paper types. The system offers different colour guides tailored to specific paper finishes, such as coated, uncoated, and newsprint. Each colour is identified by a unique HKS code, facilitating clear communication and accurate colour reproduction.

The HKS system is comparable to other colour matching systems such as Pantone, but they are not directly interchangeable. Each system uses its own unique set of inks and colour formulas. It is essential to use the correct colour book or software to ensure accurate colour conversion and printing. HKS colours are regularly updated to reflect changes in the printing industry and to ensure their continued relevance.
