Mamrai

Mamrai refers to a location and a biblical narrative found in the Book of Genesis in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Specifically, it designates the grove of Mamre near Hebron, where Abraham dwelt. The name "Mamre" may also refer to an Amorite chieftain who was allied with Abraham.

Biblical Significance:

  • Abraham's Dwelling Place: Mamre is primarily known as the place where Abraham settled after separating from his nephew Lot (Genesis 13:18). He pitched his tent near the oaks or terebinth trees of Mamre, which belonged to the Amorite.
  • Alliance with Amorites: Genesis 14:13, 24 mentions that Abraham had an alliance with Mamre, Eshcol, and Aner, who were Amorite chieftains. They aided Abraham in rescuing Lot after he was taken captive.
  • Theophany: The most significant event associated with Mamre is the appearance of three men to Abraham, representing God (Genesis 18). This theophany is often interpreted as a pre-incarnate appearance of the Trinity. Abraham offered them hospitality under the oak tree at Mamre. During this encounter, the visitors prophesied that Sarah would conceive and bear a son, Isaac, despite her advanced age.
  • Intercession for Sodom: Following the theophany, Abraham walked with the visitors toward Sodom and Gomorrah. He interceded with God, pleading for the cities to be spared if righteous people could be found there (Genesis 18:16-33).

Location:

The precise location of Mamre is debated, but it is generally believed to be in the vicinity of modern-day Hebron in the West Bank. The traditional site, known as Ramat el-Khalil, features the remains of a large Herodian structure thought to have been built to commemorate the biblical event.
