Barga (department)

Barga is a former department of Inner Mongolia, China. It was established as an administrative division in 1929 under the Republic of China and continued after the Communist Revolution until its dissolution in 1949. The department comprised a large region encompassing much of what is now Hulunbuir. Its administrative center was Hailar.

The name "Barga" refers to the Bargut people, a Mongolic group historically inhabiting the area. The department was primarily a pastoral region, with animal husbandry being the dominant economic activity.

Following the Chinese Civil War, the administrative structure of Inner Mongolia was reorganized. Barga was dissolved and its territory was incorporated into other leagues and banners, contributing to the broader administrative regions that exist within Inner Mongolia today. The specific administrative divisions it was redistributed into eventually became part of Hulunbuir League (now Hulunbuir City).

Historical records and maps from the early to mid-20th century document the existence and boundaries of Barga.
