Founded in 1758 as a chapel of ease to Christ Church, St. Peter's quickly grew in importance. The building was designed by architect Robert Smith and completed in 1761. Significant additions and alterations were made throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, notably the addition of the steeple in 1842 and the chancel in 1881.
