Cumberland (1827 ship)
The Cumberland was a three-masted barque built in Whitehaven, England, in 1827. She was primarily engaged in trade and passenger transport between England and Australia, specifically Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) and New South Wales. Records indicate voyages transporting convicts as well as free settlers and their families. The Cumberland also carried cargo such as textiles, tools, and provisions to the Australian colonies, and returned to England with wool, whale oil, and other Australian commodities. She was a relatively large vessel for her time, allowing for the accommodation of significant numbers of both passengers and cargo. Specific details of her later years and ultimate fate are currently difficult to ascertain definitively from available records.
