Tom Fleming (runner)
Tom Fleming (1951 – April 19, 2017) was an American long-distance runner, known primarily for his success in marathon running. Fleming achieved notable victories in the New York City Marathon in 1973 and 1975. He also finished second in the Boston Marathon on two occasions, in 1973 and 1975, losing closely contested races.
Fleming grew up in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and developed his running talent at Bloomfield High School. His success in road racing during the 1970s contributed to the burgeoning popularity of marathon running in the United States. After his competitive running career, he became a respected coach, guiding many runners to personal bests and marathon finishes. He coached at Montclair Kimberley Academy in Montclair, New Jersey.
Fleming's career was characterized by his toughness and dedication to training. He was a prominent figure in the running community and remembered for his contributions both on the road and as a mentor to aspiring athletes. He passed away from complications related to a heart attack.
