Open Sesame (Whodini album)

Open Sesame is the third studio album by American hip hop group Whodini, released in 1984 on Jive Records. The album spawned the singles "Big Mouth" and "Escape (I Need a Break)."

The title, "Open Sesame," refers to the magic phrase used in the story of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves from the collection of Middle Eastern folk tales One Thousand and One Nights (also known as Arabian Nights). In the story, the phrase opens the entrance to a hidden cave where the thieves have stored their treasure.

The album's sound builds upon the group's earlier electro-funk style, further developing their signature blend of synthesizers, drum machines, and socially conscious lyrics. "Open Sesame" is notable for its influence on the development of hip hop and its place in the golden age of the genre. It is considered by many to be one of Whodini's strongest and most influential works. The album explores themes of everyday life, relationships, and the challenges faced by urban communities. Its production is credited to Larry Smith, who also worked on Run-DMC's early albums.
