John Hunter (rower)

John Hunter (born August 17, 1943) is a New Zealand rower who competed at multiple Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games. He is best known for winning a gold medal in the coxless pair event at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, alongside Dick Tonks.

Hunter began his rowing career in New Zealand. He quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional skill and dedication. His partnership with Dick Tonks proved particularly successful.

At the 1972 Munich Olympics, Hunter and Tonks dominated the coxless pair competition. Their performance throughout the regatta culminated in a decisive victory in the final, earning them the gold medal and establishing them as one of the top rowing pairs in the world.

Hunter also represented New Zealand at other international competitions, including the Commonwealth Games, where he secured further medals. He remained involved in the sport after his competitive career ended, contributing to rowing through coaching and administration.
