Tsune Watanabe

Tsune Watanabe (渡邉 恒雄, Watanabe Tsuneo, born May 30, 1926) is a Japanese journalist and media executive. He is best known for his long association with Yomiuri Shimbun, one of Japan's leading newspapers, and his significant influence over its editorial policy and direction.

Watanabe joined Yomiuri Shimbun in 1946. He rose through the ranks, holding various editorial positions before becoming the editor-in-chief and later chairman and editor-in-chief. Currently, he holds the title of Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Representative.

Watanabe is a controversial figure, often described as a conservative nationalist. His strong opinions on political and social issues are frequently reflected in the Yomiuri Shimbun's coverage, particularly regarding matters of national security, historical revisionism, and relations with neighboring countries like China and South Korea. He is a vocal supporter of strengthening Japan's military and revising its pacifist constitution.

His tenure has been marked by accusations of biased reporting and political interference. Critics argue that his influence has led to the suppression of dissenting opinions and the promotion of a particular ideological viewpoint within the newspaper. However, supporters claim that he has strengthened the Yomiuri Shimbun's position as a leading voice in Japanese media and contributed to a more robust national debate.
