Cognasse
Cognasse (pronounced /kɔɲas/) is a French word with two primary meanings.
Firstly, "cognasse" refers to the fruit of the quince tree ( Cydonia oblonga). A quince is a pome fruit, similar to apples and pears, but generally harder, more acidic, and astringent in its raw state. Cognasses are often cooked to be made into jams, jellies, preserves, and other confections. They develop a distinctive aroma and color when cooked.
Secondly, and more colloquially, "cognasse" can be used as a derogatory term, often implying incompetence, stupidity, or clumsiness. It is often used to describe someone who is foolish or makes silly mistakes. The exact nuance depends on context and tone. It can range from a light-hearted teasing to a more severe insult.
