The Sharks (band)

The Sharks were a British rock and roll band active in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They are best known for their raw and energetic style, drawing heavily from 1950s rockabilly and rock and roll traditions. The band's sound was characterized by high-energy performances and a focus on vintage instrumentation and aesthetics.

The band was formed in the UK and consisted of vocalist and guitarist Alan Wilson, guitarist Chris Spedding, bassist Steve Nicol, and drummer John "Gypie Mayo" Cawthra (later replaced by Marty Machia). They quickly gained a following on the pub rock circuit and developed a reputation for their exciting live shows.

The Sharks released two studio albums: First Water (1972) and Jab It In Yore Eye (1973). First Water is considered by many to be a foundational album in the development of the rockabilly revival scene. Despite critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase, the band struggled to achieve mainstream success. Internal tensions and disagreements contributed to their eventual breakup.

Despite their relatively short career, The Sharks have had a lasting impact on rock and roll and rockabilly music. Their music has been rediscovered and appreciated by subsequent generations of musicians and fans. Alan Wilson's songwriting and vocal style, combined with Chris Spedding's guitar work, cemented their place in rock history. Many artists cite The Sharks as an influence, and their music continues to be enjoyed by fans of vintage rock and roll.

After the band's initial disbandment, members pursued individual musical projects. Chris Spedding continued a successful solo career, becoming a sought-after session musician and guitarist. Alan Wilson continued to perform and record, maintaining a connection to the rockabilly style. Their legacy as a pioneering rock and roll band continues to grow.
