USS Cecil
USS Cecil (APA-96) was a Bayfield-class attack transport that served in the United States Navy during World War II. She was named after Cecil County, Maryland.
Cecil was launched on April 25, 1943, by Western Pipe & Steel Co., San Francisco, California, under a Maritime Commission contract; transferred to the Navy on June 30, 1943; and commissioned on January 14, 1944, Commander James S. Willis in command.
Throughout her service, Cecil participated in multiple amphibious assaults in the Pacific Theater. She landed troops and equipment at Saipan, Guam, Leyte, Lingayen Gulf, and Okinawa. She also transported troops and supplies to various locations in the Pacific.
Following the end of World War II, Cecil participated in Operation Magic Carpet, transporting returning troops from the Pacific to the United States. She was decommissioned on January 17, 1946, and struck from the Naval Vessel Register on February 1, 1946. She was sold for scrapping on September 25, 1947.
Cecil received five battle stars for her World War II service.
