Rehber (Alevism)
In Alevism, a Rehber (pronounced Reh-ber) is a spiritual guide or mentor, playing a crucial role in the initiation and ongoing spiritual development of an Alevi individual. The Rehber serves as a teacher, counselor, and exemplar of Alevi principles and practices.
The role of the Rehber is fundamentally linked to the concept of talip-mürşit-rehber (seeker-guide-mentor), a hierarchical structure central to Alevi spiritual guidance. A talip (seeker or novice) chooses a Rehber based on personal connection, trust, and the Rehber's demonstrated understanding and embodiment of Alevi beliefs.
The Rehber guides the talip through the essential tenets of Alevism, including the importance of Ehl-i Beyt (the family of Prophet Muhammad), the On İki İmam (Twelve Imams), and the philosophy of tevella-teberra (love for the friends of God and rejection of his enemies). They also instruct the talip on Alevi rituals such as the Cem (the central Alevi worship service), fasting during Muharram, and the importance of moral conduct.
The relationship between Rehber and talip is deeply personal and confidential. The Rehber provides individualized guidance, addressing the talip's specific needs and questions. This mentoring relationship continues throughout the talip's life, offering support and direction in their spiritual journey.
The selection of a Rehber is a serious matter, requiring careful consideration and often involving consultation with other Alevi community members. The Rehber must possess not only knowledge of Alevi doctrines and practices but also integrity, compassion, and the ability to inspire and motivate the talip on their path of spiritual growth. The Rehber is typically, but not exclusively, selected from respected members of the Alevi community with significant experience and knowledge.
The role of the Rehber is essential for the transmission and preservation of Alevi traditions and values from one generation to the next. They serve as living examples of Alevi principles, ensuring the continuity of this unique spiritual tradition.
