Webalizer
The Webalizer is a fast, free web server log file analysis program. It produces highly detailed, easily configurable usage statistics in HTML format for viewing with a standard web browser. It supports multiple log file formats, including common web server log formats like CLF (Common Log Format), NCSA combined log format, and several variations of these.
The program analyzes log files to provide data regarding website traffic, including the number of hits, visits, pages viewed, countries of origin, referring sites, and the most popular URLs on the server. This data is presented in a series of tables and graphs, making it easier to understand trends in website usage.
The Webalizer is configurable via a configuration file, allowing users to specify log file locations, output directory, hostname, and various options to fine-tune the generated statistics. It's designed to be run periodically, often as a cron job, to update the statistics as new log entries are added.
While the Webalizer was a popular tool in the past, it is now considered somewhat dated. Development has slowed, and many modern web analytics tools offer more advanced features and real-time data. Nevertheless, the Webalizer remains a viable option for basic log analysis, especially on older systems or where a lightweight, server-side solution is preferred.
