Megacara
Megacara is a genus of ant in the subfamily Myrmicinae. These ants are characterized by their exceptionally large size, particularly when compared to other members of the Crematogaster genus, to which they were once assigned. The defining characteristic of Megacara ants is their extraordinarily large head size relative to their body.
Taxonomically, Megacara is notable for its relatively recent elevation from a subgenus of Crematogaster to a distinct genus. This change reflects a deeper understanding of its unique morphological and genetic characteristics.
Currently, the known geographic distribution of Megacara is primarily limited to specific regions within Southeast Asia. Their habitat typically includes rainforests and other tropical environments where they nest in trees or other pre-existing cavities.
Information regarding the specific behavior and colony structure of Megacara ants is still relatively limited. Observations suggest they are arboreal and may exhibit predatory behaviors, though detailed studies are needed to fully understand their foraging strategies and diet. The social structure and colony size of Megacara ants are also areas requiring further research.
