António Teixeira (composer)

António Teixeira (c. 1707 – c. 1769) was a Portuguese composer of the late Baroque and early Classical periods. He is best known for his sacred music, particularly his Te Deum, which was long attributed to other composers, including Alessandro Scarlatti and Antonio Draghi.

Teixeira was born in Lisbon, Portugal. The details of his early life and musical training are scarce, but it is believed he studied music in Italy, possibly in Rome. Upon his return to Portugal, he held various positions as a church musician in Lisbon. He served as mestre de capela (music director) at the Patriarchal See of Lisbon.

His compositions include masses, motets, vespers, and other liturgical works. While his Te Deum is his most recognized work, a significant portion of his output remains relatively unknown and requires further research. Teixeira's style is characterized by a blending of Italian and Portuguese musical traditions, showcasing both dramatic flair and lyrical sensitivity. He is considered an important figure in the development of Portuguese Baroque music.
