David Hobbs (racing driver)
David Hobbs (born June 9, 1939) is a British former racing driver and current television commentator. Hobbs enjoyed a long and varied career in motorsports, competing in Formula One, IndyCar, sports car racing, and touring cars.
Hobbs began his racing career in the early 1960s, quickly demonstrating his talent. He participated in several Formula One Grands Prix, although without significant success. His Grand Prix debut was at the 1967 British Grand Prix, driving a BRM.
Hobbs achieved considerable success in sports car racing, particularly in the United States. He drove for prominent teams and manufacturers, including Porsche, BMW, and Lola. He won numerous races, including the 1969 Watkins Glen Six Hours and the 1971 BOAC 1000 km at Brands Hatch.
In IndyCar racing, Hobbs competed in several Indianapolis 500 races, achieving a best finish of fifth in 1974. He also enjoyed success in Trans-Am series, winning the championship in 1983.
After retiring from racing, Hobbs transitioned to a career as a motorsports commentator. He is known for his insightful analysis and witty commentary, working for networks such as ESPN, CBS, and Speed Channel. His broadcasting career has spanned several decades, making him a well-known and respected voice in motorsports. He has also been recognized for his contributions to the sport, being inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2009.
