George M. Curtis (Iowa politician)

George M. Curtis (1844 – 1921) was an American politician and lawyer from Iowa. He served as a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives representing Iowa's 4th congressional district from 1889 to 1891.

Born in Chenango County, New York, Curtis moved to Lyons, Iowa (later part of Clinton, Iowa) in 1856. He received his education at Lyons High School and attended the University of Michigan Law School, graduating in 1866. He was admitted to the Iowa bar the same year and commenced practice in Clinton.

Curtis was elected mayor of Clinton, Iowa, serving in that role from 1871 to 1873. He also served as a member of the Iowa State Senate from 1877 to 1889, representing Clinton County.

In 1888, Curtis was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served one term, from March 4, 1889, to March 3, 1891. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1890.

After his term in Congress, Curtis resumed the practice of law in Clinton. He also engaged in banking and other business interests. He died in Clinton, Iowa, on July 5, 1921, and was interred in Springdale Cemetery.
