HMS Linnet (1806)

HMS Linnet was a Merlin-class sloop of the British Royal Navy, launched in 1806. She was built by Nicholson at Rye.

Linnet saw extensive service during the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. One notable action occurred on Lake Champlain in 1814, where she formed part of the British squadron under Captain George Downie. The British squadron engaged an American squadron under Master Commandant Thomas Macdonough in the Battle of Plattsburgh (also known as the Battle of Lake Champlain).

During the battle, Linnet was heavily engaged and suffered significant damage and casualties. Despite the efforts of her crew, the British squadron was defeated, and Linnet, along with the other surviving British vessels, was forced to surrender.

Following her capture, Linnet was taken into the United States Navy and renamed Linnet. She continued to serve in the US Navy for a number of years.

Her armament consisted primarily of carronades, typical for sloops of her class, although this configuration could vary.

She should not be confused with other ships named Linnet serving in the Royal Navy before or after this vessel.
