Terence Smith (journalist)

Terence Smith (born November 20, 1938) is an American journalist and media critic. He is best known for his long career at The New York Times and his later role as a media correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer (later PBS NewsHour) on PBS.

Smith joined The New York Times in 1962 and served as a correspondent in Moscow, Paris, and Rome. He held various positions including diplomatic correspondent and national economics correspondent before becoming assistant managing editor.

In 1998, Smith left The New York Times to join The NewsHour as a media correspondent. He provided insightful analysis of media trends, coverage of major news events, and ethical issues in journalism. He conducted numerous interviews with prominent figures in the media landscape. He retired from PBS NewsHour in 2005.

Smith is the author of several books, including The Thief Who Couldn't Spell and Seeing the Elephant: An Autobiography. He has also contributed articles to various publications on media and international affairs. Throughout his career, Smith was recognized for his thoughtful reporting and analysis.
