Thomas Cook House (Somerville, Massachusetts)
The Thomas Cook House is a historic house located at 240 Summer Street in Somerville, Massachusetts. Built in 1867, it is a well-preserved example of Italianate architecture. The two-and-a-half story wood-frame house features bracketed eaves, a low-pitched hipped roof, and arched windows. Its most prominent feature is a three-story tower on one side, adding vertical emphasis to the building.
The house was originally built for Thomas Cook, a local businessman involved in real estate and local politics. Cook served as a city councilor in Somerville. The house remained in the Cook family for several generations.
The Thomas Cook House is significant as a representative example of the upper-middle-class housing stock that developed in Somerville during its period of rapid growth in the late 19th century. Its Italianate styling reflects the popular architectural trends of the time.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It continues to be a private residence.
