USS Finch (AM-9)

The USS Finch (AM-9) was a Lapwing-class minesweeper of the United States Navy. Commissioned in 1918, she served during World War I and continued her service in the interwar period. As a minesweeper, her primary mission was to clear naval mines from waterways, ensuring safe passage for other vessels.

The Finch saw active duty during World War I, operating in European waters. Following the war, she returned to the United States and continued to perform minesweeping duties along the American coastline and in the Caribbean. She participated in various fleet exercises and training operations.

Decommissioned in the 1930s, the USS Finch was scrapped, marking the end of her service life. While not involved in major combat engagements, the USS Finch and ships of her class played a vital role in maintaining maritime safety and supporting naval operations. The Lapwing class of minesweepers were among the first purpose-built minesweepers constructed for the U.S. Navy.
