WHAS-TV
WHAS-TV is a television station in Louisville, Kentucky, United States, affiliated with ABC. It is owned by TEGNA Inc. Its studios are located on West Main Street in downtown Louisville, and its transmitter is located in the city's east end.
The station signed on the air on March 27, 1950, as Kentucky's first television station. It was originally owned by the Bingham family, along with WHAS radio (840 AM) and The Courier-Journal newspaper. The call letters stand for "WHAS," the initials of the newspaper's former owner, Walter Hines Sims.
During its early years, WHAS-TV carried programming from all four major television networks of the time (ABC, CBS, NBC, and DuMont). It became a primary CBS affiliate in 1951 but maintained secondary affiliations with ABC and DuMont. Following the shutdown of DuMont in 1956, WHAS-TV became an exclusive CBS affiliate.
In 1981, the Bingham family sold WHAS-TV to Providence Journal Company. The station switched its affiliation to ABC on September 1, 1990, after Providence Journal acquired WLKY (channel 32), which had been Louisville's ABC affiliate.
Over the years, WHAS-TV has been known for its strong local news coverage and community involvement. Its news programming includes newscasts, investigative reports, and public affairs shows. The station has received numerous awards for its journalism and public service efforts.
TEGNA Inc. acquired WHAS-TV in 2019 as part of its purchase of the assets of the former Gannett Company.
