KFVS-TV first signed on the air on October 4, 1954, as the first television station in southeastern Missouri. Its call letters are derived from the initials of Oscar Hirsch's late wife, Kathryn Frances Vasterling Hirsch. The station has long been the dominant television station in the Cape Girardeau market, consistently ranking as the highest-rated station in the region.
