Noritani

The Noritani were an ancient Celtic tribe inhabiting a region of Noricum, corresponding roughly to modern-day Austria. Their territory encompassed the area around the Eastern Alps and the Drava River valley. They are mentioned in historical accounts primarily in connection with the Roman conquest of Noricum and the subsequent integration of the region into the Roman Empire.

The Noritani, like other Norican tribes, engaged in iron production and trade, contributing significantly to the region's wealth. They were known for their high-quality iron, which was valued by the Romans. The tribe likely maintained a tribal organization with chiefs or kings, although specific details about their social and political structures are limited.

The Romans gradually exerted influence over Noricum, initially through trade and diplomacy. Eventually, the region was annexed into the Roman Empire under Emperor Augustus. The Noritani, along with other Norican tribes, were integrated into the Roman provincial system. Their cultural identity gradually assimilated with Roman culture, although traces of their Celtic heritage likely persisted.

References to the Noritani are found in the writings of classical authors such as Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy. Archaeological evidence from the region also provides insights into their material culture and way of life.
