I Airborne Corps (United Kingdom)
I Airborne Corps was a short-lived airborne forces formation of the British Army during the Second World War. Formed in August 1944, it comprised the 1st Airborne Division, the 6th Airborne Division, and supporting arms. The corps was intended for large-scale airborne operations in North-West Europe following the Normandy landings.
Its first and only planned operation was Operation Market Garden in September 1944. The corps was tasked with seizing key bridges in the Netherlands, paving the way for a ground advance by XXX Corps. Lieutenant-General Frederick Browning commanded I Airborne Corps during the operation.
Following the failure of Operation Market Garden, I Airborne Corps was disbanded in November 1944. The constituent divisions reverted to control of other formations. The concept of a dedicated airborne corps for the British Army was not pursued again during the war.
