Heaven and Earth (John Martyn album)
Heaven and Earth is the twenty-second studio album by British singer-songwriter John Martyn, released in May 2011. It was the final studio album released during his lifetime, preceding his death in January 2009, although it was constructed from recordings made primarily between 2003 and 2006.
The album's creation involved substantial posthumous production work, including contributions from producer Jim Tullio, who was tasked with completing the album after Martyn's death. The album features a blend of newly recorded material and reworked versions of older Martyn songs, as well as collaborations with other musicians, including Robert Cray.
Heaven and Earth represents a diverse range of Martyn's musical styles, encompassing elements of folk, jazz, and blues. The album includes both original compositions and covers, showcasing Martyn's signature vocal delivery and guitar playing. Some of the songs feature his characteristic use of Echoplex effects.
The album received mixed to positive reviews upon release. Critics generally praised Martyn's vocals and musicianship, but some noted the unevenness of the material and the impact of the posthumous production. The album stands as a final testament to John Martyn's prolific and influential career.
