Imamzadeh Hossein (Kordan)

Imamzadeh Hossein (Kordan) is a historical religious complex located in Kordan village, Savojbolagh County, Alborz Province, Iran. It is a significant pilgrimage site for Shia Muslims and is believed to house the tomb of a descendant of Imam Ali, specifically Hossein, son of Imam Sajjad (the fourth Shia Imam).

The complex includes a mausoleum, courtyard, minarets, and other structures. The original structure is believed to date back to the Seljuk period, with subsequent renovations and expansions throughout the centuries, particularly during the Ilkhanate and Safavid eras. The architecture reflects these different periods, exhibiting influences of various Islamic architectural styles.

The mausoleum is typically adorned with intricate tilework, mirrorwork, and calligraphy. The interior often houses a zarih (a decorative metal screen) surrounding the supposed tomb. The complex plays an important role in local religious and cultural life, hosting ceremonies, prayers, and commemorations, especially during Muharram and other significant Islamic holidays. The site attracts pilgrims from across Iran and beyond. While the genealogical lineage is generally accepted within the local population and among pilgrims, scholarly confirmation of Hossein's exact lineage can be limited and based primarily on local traditions and narratives. Conservation efforts are ongoing to preserve this historically and religiously important site.
