Aalbek (Stör)
Aalbek is a regional German name, specifically used in areas around the Elbe river, for the European Sturgeon ( Acipenser sturio). The term "Stör" is the standard German word for sturgeon. Therefore, "Aalbek (Stör)" indicates a local designation for this particular species of sturgeon. The term likely arose from the sturgeon's eel-like (Aal = eel) body shape and its historical presence in the Elbe River system. The European Sturgeon is a critically endangered species, and while historically abundant in European rivers, including the Elbe, populations have drastically declined due to overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution. Conservation efforts are underway to reintroduce sturgeon to some of their native habitats. The Aalbek, as a locally recognized name, highlights the historical significance of this fish to the culture and ecology of the Elbe region.
