Colleoni

Bartolomeo Colleoni (c. 1400 – 1475) was an Italian condottiero, or mercenary military leader, from the Republic of Venice. He served various city-states throughout his career, including Venice, Milan, and Naples.

Colleoni is known for his military skill, strategic thinking, and leadership abilities. He commanded armies in numerous battles and sieges, often achieving victory against larger or better-equipped forces. His understanding of terrain, fortifications, and troop movements contributed significantly to his success.

After a long and distinguished career, Colleoni died in 1475. In his will, he left a substantial portion of his wealth to the Republic of Venice, stipulating that a statue of himself be erected in the Piazza San Marco. However, Venetian law prohibited the placement of statues in that specific location. As a compromise, the famed equestrian statue of Colleoni, sculpted by Andrea del Verrocchio, was placed in the Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo near the Scuola Grande di San Marco. This statue remains one of the most celebrated examples of Renaissance sculpture and a lasting testament to Colleoni's reputation.

The Colleoni Chapel in Bergamo, Italy, is another significant monument dedicated to him. This elaborately decorated chapel, designed by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, houses Colleoni's tomb and is a masterpiece of Lombard Renaissance architecture.
