José Villegas (footballer, born 1934)
José Villegas Tavares (June 20, 1934 – December 16, 2021), also known as "El Jamaicón", was a Mexican professional footballer who played as a defender. He is best known for his time with C.D. Guadalajara (Chivas), where he was a key member of the "Campeonísimo" team that dominated Mexican football in the late 1950s and 1960s.
Villegas was born in La Experiencia, Jalisco, Mexico. He joined Guadalajara in 1954 and quickly established himself as a reliable and hard-tackling defender. He was known for his strength, speed, and aerial ability.
During his career with Chivas, Villegas won eight Mexican league titles (1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1964, 1965, 1970), one Copa México (1963), and seven Campeón de Campeones titles. He played his entire professional career with the club.
Villegas also represented the Mexico national team. He participated in the 1958 and 1962 FIFA World Cups.
After retiring from professional football, Villegas remained involved in the sport, often appearing at Chivas events. He was a popular figure among fans and remembered as one of the greatest defenders in the club's history.
José Villegas Tavares passed away on December 16, 2021, in Guadalajara at the age of 87. His legacy as a key player of the Campeonísimo era ensures his place among Chivas legends.
