Third rail (politics)

In politics, the term "third rail" refers to an issue that is so controversial and politically charged that any politician who attempts to address it risks severe, often career-ending, consequences. The metaphor comes from the third rail in some electric railway systems, which carries a high voltage of electricity and is extremely dangerous to touch.

A political third rail is typically a policy area that is deeply entrenched in public opinion, often touching upon core values or deeply held beliefs. Attempts to change the status quo, even with good intentions, can provoke intense backlash from voters, interest groups, and even members of the politician's own party.

The consequences of touching a third rail can include:
