Naiskos

A naiskos (plural: naiskoi) is a small, temple-like structure in classical architecture. It is typically a miniature representation of a temple, often found in funerary or votive contexts. Naiskoi served as shrines, memorials, or architectural decorations.

In funerary art, naiskoi frequently appear on grave stelae and other funerary monuments, depicting the deceased within the structure. This imagery may have suggested a dwelling place for the soul of the deceased, a connection to the gods, or a symbolic representation of the deceased's social standing.

Naiskoi were constructed using various materials, including marble, limestone, and terracotta. Their designs mirrored the architectural styles of the time, featuring columns, pediments, and other temple-like features. They ranged in size from small, portable objects to larger, more elaborate structures.
