Zeitgeber

A Zeitgeber (German for "time-giver") is an environmental cue that helps regulate the body's internal biological clock in a 24-hour period. These cues synchronize the body's circadian rhythm, which influences various physiological processes, including sleep-wake cycles, hormone release, body temperature, and even gene expression.

The most powerful and well-known Zeitgeber is light, particularly sunlight. Exposure to light signals the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus, the brain's master clock, to adjust the body's rhythm accordingly. However, other environmental and social cues can also act as Zeitgebers.

Examples of Zeitgebers include:

This misalignment can result in various health problems, including sleep disorders, mood disorders, and metabolic dysfunction. Jet lag and shift work are common examples of situations where Zeitgebers are disrupted. Understanding and managing Zeitgebers is crucial for maintaining healthy circadian rhythms and overall well-being.
