Goat Island (Trinidad and Tobago)
Goat Island is a small island located off the northeastern coast of Tobago, one of the two main islands comprising the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It is situated near Speyside, a popular location for diving and snorkeling. Goat Island is uninhabited and relatively undeveloped.
The island's name likely originates from the presence of goats that were historically left to graze there. Its terrain is characterized by rocky cliffs and some vegetation.
Goat Island is of historical significance as it was once owned by British painter Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. While Fleming did not reside on the island, he reportedly used it as inspiration for some of his writing. He later sold the island to John Cleese of Monty Python fame. Cleese, in turn, reportedly sold it in 2023.
The island's surrounding waters form part of the protected area of the Speyside marine area, making it of interest for marine conservation. It is primarily used for recreational activities like snorkeling, diving, and boat trips, and is usually viewed as part of a larger dive or tourism experience in the Speyside area.
