Clwyd East (UK Parliament constituency)
Clwyd East is a constituency in Wales represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first-past-the-post system of election.
The constituency was created for the 1997 general election, largely replacing the former constituency of Clwyd North West. It covers the eastern part of the historic county of Clwyd.
Geographically, Clwyd East includes towns such as Ruthin, Denbigh, and Llangollen, and a significant rural area. The economy of the region is diverse, encompassing agriculture, tourism, and some manufacturing.
The current MP for Clwyd East is Sarah Atherton of the Conservative Party, who was first elected in 2019. Prior to Atherton, the seat was held by Labour MPs for the entirety of its existence since its creation.
Historically, Clwyd East has been a bellwether seat, tending to follow the national trend in general elections. However, the Conservative win in 2019 bucked that trend, signaling a significant shift in political allegiance within the region. The constituency boundaries have remained largely unchanged since its creation.
